ORIGIN STORY

Culture Cure was founded to address and undo the overtime normalisation of toxic practices in the workplace, creating a vicious cycle of bullying, discrimination and abuse. We wanted to eradicate from its roots the underlying focus on profits over people that businesses and workplaces are increasingly practicing in the current times.

So much of human time and energy is wasted in navigating through the unpleasant experiences within the workplace such as the constant tussle to do better than a particular person or within a group of people.

Ideally, a workplace should be the space for growth, development, productivity and achievements. We advocate for community over competition and believe that everyone within a workplace deserves to be celebrated for their unique skill sets.

Workplace wellbeing should be non-negotiable.

THE JOURNEY

Therefore, we created a space, judgement-free haven for our patrons to share their stories, have the appropriate support system – carefully designed to build independent capacities.

We are constantly working with the data collected from our subscribers, to best present to you the tools you require to recover from whatever situation you may be in and reclaim your worth at work.

We want to empower a community of unstoppable, supportive and career driven professionals and together, define success!

OUR PROCESS

We use a ‘regenerative framework’ inspired by Christian Wahl’s model Beyond Sustainability Designing regenerative cultures, to address the root cause of toxic workplaces not just the symptoms.

We recgnoise the parallels between child labour, domestic violance, opression and the people over profit mentalty that enables toxicity to escalate and prevail. Currently there is a lack of qualitative and qualitative data on the impacts of abusive workplaces to the individual's health. Without clear metrics, policies and legislation there can not be accountability. Accurate and inclusive data is integral to inform substantial change.

That’s why we co-design our services with the people first and encourage our patrons to confidentially contribute their story to our data pool. Our membership community is an affordable way to help the people who need it most address the symptoms of toxic workplace culture and protect their wellbeing, while the stories shared tackles the systemic issue.

Everyone story matters by working together as a collective we can identify new patterns between

1) The long term impacts of workplace abuse and chronic health risks.

2) Ways to embed unique cultures into companies (not fit people into the workplace but embrace them for their unique perspective)

3) Remote work in a globalised world as an opportunity for cultural conversations.

These insights can be shared with policy makers, government bodies and individuals who want to strengthen their case. Our story-led data insights will address the root causes of the multi-generational cycle of workplace abuse and provide new solutions to create a healthy and inclusive working world.

Our Founder

I worked in the corporate sectors for some of the biggest international entertainment brands, however, I did not feel quite like myself. I was convinced that I was living my dream career, years of pay back had finally paid off. In theory, everything was going well.

However, behind closed doors and non-disclosure agreements I found myself stuck in a toxic workplace setting. It took me a while to understand that pecking-orders, competitive colleagues, subtle manipulations and direct threats do not make for a healthy workplace environment and I wasn’t wrong, demanding and “too” sensitive for choosing to not put myself through it any further.

Everyone would say it is normal to have work conflicts, just keep your head down and work hard. If I kept my head down any lower, I’d be burying it in sand.

I realised that my experiences were not isolated incidents. Upon research and observation of growing work culture trends I saw that many such malpractices have normalised over time. I decided to speak up, garner support and initiate “Culture Cure” – from there on, everything changed, and I began to reclaim my career (and my life!). I learnt that once I broke my silence, joined hands with those who believed in my cause – I was undefeatable.

It is time to elevate your career, take back your power and fight for the life you deserve.

Garima Mangal

Community Engagement Officer

Hi, my name is Garima.

I moved to Melbourne, Australia from New Delhi, India in 2017 to pursue Master of International Development from RMIT University.

I grew up in a culture where gender norms and other societal stratifications were harshly imposed. To the point, nobody questioned them or even felt they had the authority to.

While growing up, I found myself to be challenging and unpacking much of what was considered normal by the people around me.

However, it was only when I moved to Australia I understood the depth of those impositions and patterns of oppression which continued to reproduce in my current environment. Even though now I was, theoretically, in a much more progressive environment.

During the course of my Master’s I was highly influenced by Paulo Freire’s explanation of ‘The Pedagogy of the Oppressed’. Which helped me discover and dissect the many ways in which oppression manifested and went unnoticed.

Within which, I found workplace toxicity to be a much accepted and normalized form of oppression which was globally prevalent.

In the time, I’ve worked at Culture Cure I have had the chance to understand in detail the implications of toxic behaviour at work and retrospect on my own experiences through university, workplaces and in day-to-day life as a woman of colour (with all the strings attached).

As an aunt to a 3-year old woman of colour and another one on the way, I am motivated more than ever before to abolish these antiquated criteria of differentiating that keep us from celebrating diversity for the beautiful thing that it is.

As an advocate for equality, I have struggled to locate it within the neoliberal climate of today’s world.

Culture Cure has re-instated my belief in this process of bringing a much-required systematic change within the workforce (and in the larger context).

“At Culture Cure, we are constantly and consistently focused on evolving the mechanisms we offer to cope with, challenge and abolish toxic workplace strategies.” - Garima Mangal
